How Much of Athens Can You See on a Cruise Stop? Plans for 6 and 9 Hours

Most cruise ships stay in Piraeus for 8 to 10 hours. Take away the time to get off the ship and back on, and you have about 5 to 7 hours in Athens. Here is what fits, without rushing back to the gangway.

With about 6 hours ashore

  • The Acropolis: allow about 1.5 hours on the hill.
  • The Acropolis Museum at the foot of the hill: about 75 minutes.
  • Lunch and a walk in Plaka or the little lanes of Anafiotika.
  • A drive past the Temple of Olympian Zeus, the Panathenaic Stadium and Syntagma Square, if you are travelling by car.

Our Athens Half Day tour covers the main sights in about 5 hours, door to door from your ship.

With about 9 hours ashore

Add more of the city, or head out of it:

  • The changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Lycabettus Hill for the view, and the National Archaeological Museum or the Ancient Agora.
  • Or the coast road to Cape Sounion and the Temple of Poseidon, with the Acropolis in the morning: our Athens and Cape Sounion tour lasts about 8 to 9 hours.
  • Or the Corinth Canal and Ancient Corinth after Athens: the Athens and Corinth Tour, also about 8 to 9 hours.

Leave a safety margin

Whatever you choose, plan to be back at the port well before the all-aboard time. Traffic around Piraeus can be slow, and the walk to the outer terminals is long. With a private driver, the timing is planned around your ship and you are driven straight to your terminal.

Acropolis Tips for Cruise Passengers: Tickets, Timing and Crowds

The Acropolis is the reason most cruise passengers come ashore in Athens, and on busy days thousands of them arrive at the same time. A little planning makes the difference between a calm visit and an hour in the sun in a queue.

Tickets and timed entry

  • A standard ticket costs €30 (2026) and is for the Acropolis only. There is no longer a combined ticket for the other ancient sites.
  • Entry is by timed slot. Book ahead on the official site, tickets.hh.gr, and arrive at the start of your slot.
  • Visitors under 18 from outside the EU, and EU citizens up to 25, enter free with ID.
  • Some days are free for everyone, including the first and third Sundays from November to March.

Beat the cruise crowds

Cruise groups usually reach the hill between 10:00 and 14:00. If your ship arrives early, the 8:00 opening is the quietest time. The main west entrance is where the tour buses unload; the south entrance, near the Acropolis Museum, is often calmer.

Opening hours

The Acropolis opens at 8:00. In summer it closes at 20:00, in winter (November to March) at 17:00, with the last entry 20 minutes before closing. On very hot summer days the site can close in the middle of the day, so check the news before you go.

What to bring and wear

  • Shoes with a good grip: the marble paths are worn smooth and slippery.
  • A hat, sunscreen and water. There is almost no shade on the hill.
  • Allow about 1.5 to 2 hours on the site, plus about 75 minutes if you add the Acropolis Museum.

Guide or no guide?

Only licensed guides may guide you inside the site. Your driver can take you to the entrance and pick you up afterwards, and if you want the full story of the Parthenon and the Erechtheion, we can add a licensed guide to your tour.
